Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Women’s Health Gender related Nurse Practitioner (WHNP)
Carlow’s Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization as a women’s health gender related nurse practitioner will allow you to promote women’s health issues while also advancing your nursing career.
National workforce data indicates that many women’s health gender related nurse practitioners are nearing retirement age. Carlow University is responding to this critical need by offering the only WHNP graduate program in Western Pennsylvania. This MSN program is leading the way with many regional providers of women’s health care by providing qualified, compassionate and dedicated women’s health gender related nurse practitioners specifically trained to provide obstetrical and gynecological care.
Nurse practitioners diagnose and treat patients as part of a health care team. They may order, perform and interpret diagnostic tests and prescribe medications. Women’s health gender related nurse practitioners provide preventive care for women in private practice settings. They may also provide adolescent health care, pregnancy testing, fertility evaluation, prenatal visits, after-pregnancy care and menopausal care.
Carlow’s MSN program is a foundation for doctoral studies and lifelong learning. Upon completion, you will be prepared to take leadership positions in nursing and will contribute to the discipline of nursing through evidence-based practice efforts.

The program curriculum meets the requirements for national board certification and advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) licensure in all U.S. states and territories. Graduates are eligible to sit for board certification as a women’s health gender related nurse practitioner through the National Credentialing Center (NCC). The program is approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.

This Boyer Model Application-like project combined efforts of interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate students to improve awareness on common comorbidities that afflict native Jamaican individuals, specifically Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension. Student education and patient testing related to these comorbidities may improve quality of living as well as equip them to monitor their current health status via use of donated medical equipment. Subsequent follow-up is planned for Spring of 2025 when another interdisciplinary, international student experience is anticipated to commence.
A multidisciplinary team (consisting of faculty from the Colleges of Health and Wellness and Arts and Science, together with students enrolled in the Family and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner graduate programs provide education and medical evaluation/treatment to the children of Bright Kids Uganda Children’s home and the communities of Oukut, Opucet and Kanyanga in Uganda each summer. This work seeks to improve medical outcomes for all children by preventable disease screening, creating inclusive learning environments, reducing disability and disease through improving access to clean water has context menu.

Our high-tech, learner-centered curriculum focuses on your development towards advanced nursing practice. You will gain the necessary knowledge and skills to manage acute chronic conditions, promote health, prevent disease, educate, and provide counseling services to individuals and families across the lifespan.
At the core of the curriculum is teamwork and collaboration, providing you with the opportunity to develop a peer network – a valuable career resource.
Hybrid classes are offered one evening every other week. For all students, clinical practica require clinical hours (600 hours) over the course of the program in a mix of urban and rural healthcare agencies.
Upon graduation, you will be eligible to sit for board certification as a family nurse practitioner through the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). The program is approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.

Our full-time faculty are doctorally prepared and board certified. Each practice as nurse practitioners in their specialty, within the community of Pittsburgh and conduct research in both clinical and academic settings.

HRSA IMPACT Grant
Carlow University was approved for a 2.6-million-dollar HRSA Grant with disbursement of funds over the next 4 years ending in 2027. This grant focuses on placing FNP students into medically underserved areas to complete their primary care rotations and a specialty rotation with a focus on women’s and behavioral health. The goal of the grant is to make a BIG IMPACT on students, preceptors, and the underserved population through “Impacting Diversity and Education of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses for Healthy Communities” . Current full time FNP students are eligible to apply for up to $23,000 in tuition reimbursement.

More than half of the coursework for the English as a Second Language program is completed at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit in nearby Homestead, where students receive specific professional development skills related to current research and best instructional practices.

Curriculum for MEd in English as a Second Language
You will study curricular development, inquiry models of instruction, interdisciplinary models, advanced exploration of cognition, motivation research and studies of creativity in education.
The English as a Second Language program features courses in cultural awareness, literacy development, instructional planning, and ESL assessment.
Through a special partnership, ESL courses are completed with either the Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV or Allegheny Intermediate Unit. The courses transfer to Carlow and are applied toward the MEd in Curriculum and Instruction. This certificate program leads to an ESL endorsement through the AIU or MIU for individuals with a Pennsylvania teaching license. Students should register on the AIU website or visit the MIU website.

Improve outcomes for students on the autism spectrum with MEd in Curriculum & Instruction
The MEd in Curriculum and Instruction: Autism Teaching will prepare you to help children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders. Emphasizing curriculum design, the program focuses on advanced teaching or instructional support positions with public, private or nonprofit organizations.
The four autism courses are offered as a special graduate certificate program. They can also be taken as a MEd in Curriculum and Instruction track. The program offers advanced study of pedagogy for working educators or other interested individuals. Teaching certification is not required for enrollment and completion of the program. It does not lead to initial teaching certification, nor does it lead to an autism endorsement unless you are a licensed teacher.

It’s estimated that more than 1% of U.S. children are diagnosed with autism, which has contributed to a high demand for qualified professionals to work with individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Carlow’s graduate certificate program will prepare you to be a special education teacher, behavior analyst, autism spectrum disorder specialist, behavioral interventionist or child advocate.

Certification information: Any teacher or other education professional who holds a current Level I or Level II certification and who successfully completes the four-course certificate sequence, is eligible for the Autism Endorsement from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). Students who successfully complete the four-course sequence, but do not hold a current Level I or Level II certification are eligible for the Carlow issued certificate of completion but not the PDE Endorsement.
Carlow’s MEd in Curriculum and Instruction: Dyslexia Teaching certificate program utilizes systematic and explicit multisensory-based structured literacy in early childhood reading instruction. You’ll get a strong foundation in those elements as well as a comprehensive look at current brain research in the field of dyslexia.
The four courses in the program can also be taken as a track in the MEd in Curriculum and Instruction program and are aligned with the International Dyslexia Association standards for educators and teachers of reading. Parents, community members or nonformal educators interested in more academic and practical information about dyslexia teaching are welcome in the program.
The MEd in Curriculum and Instruction program with a dyslexia track features courses in curriculum theory, motivation and creativity, improvement science, and multi-sensory teaching methods. Community partnerships in the Pittsburgh area offer workshops and activities with guest speakers.
With Carlow’s Dyslexia Teaching certificate, you’ll be on your way to helping students improve their reading and close achievement gaps. Carlow’s four-course dyslexia certificate equips practitioners with the skillset to plan and implement systematic, explicit, multi-modal, diagnostic, and intensive instruction. The Dyslexia Certificate courses are rigorously aligned to the International Dyslexia Association’s Knowledge and Practice Standards for teachers of reading. Non-formal educators, parents and community members are welcome as well. The program has long-standing community partnerships in the Pittsburgh area that result in workshops, activities and guest speakers.

Highly qualified literacy practitioners who possess a deep knowledge in the body of research known as the Science of Reading are in high demand. As NAEP, National Assessment of Educational Progress continues to report, nearly two-thirds of our nation’s 4th and 8th graders are reading below proficiency. Teacher knowledge is key in resolving this literacy crisis. Carlow’s rigorous coursework equips literacy practitioners with the essential knowledge and critical skills needed to support students, systems, and stakeholders in closing literacy achievment gaps for students across our county.

Improve outcomes for young children as an early childhood leader
In Carlow’s master’s in Early Childhood Leadership program, you will focus on evaluating early learning programs, coaching in an educational setting and developing curriculum. You will have a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of Head Start supervisor, center director, classroom coach and mentor.
The MEd in Curriculum and Instruction: Early Childhood Leadership degree offers advanced study of pedagogy for working educators or other interested individuals. Teaching certification is not required for enrollment in this program, and it does not lead to initial teaching certification.
The curriculum in the Early Childhood Leadership program includes an examination of developmentally appropriate practices for each age group, along with models for parent involvement. The care and education of young children is studied from a historical perspective that includes current challenges and trends in child care, Head Start, preschool and early intervention programs.
You’ll learn about delivery of service and governmental licensing standards, leading to a case study of an operational program. Community partnerships in the Pittsburgh area offer workshops and activities with guest speakers.

Preparing for a digital world: Familiarize yourself with educational Technology with a Master’s in online teaching
An Online Teaching degree will prepare you to design instruction and lead classrooms using best practices and innovative technology.
Educational and corporate leaders seek instructional designers who manage content and improve learning across virtual environments.
