Rooted in Carlow’s mission of mercy, justice, and service, the Atkins Center for Ethics is our hub for ethical reflection, leadership, and impact. The center empowers and equips students, faculty, staff, and community partners to explore the moral questions of our time, and pursue, with passion, decisions that create a more just and merciful world.
At the Center, you won’t just study ethics, you’ll learn to embody them through programs focused on ethical decision-making, leadership development, and civic engagement.
Established in 2017 through the generosity of Michele and Patrick Atkins, the Center mirrors Michele’s enduring belief that Carlow is uniquely positioned to shape leaders who serve with integrity. Their gift created a space for reflection and laid the groundwork for a movement. Today, that movement extends into classrooms, communities, and workplaces—guiding ethical growth in education, healthcare, technology, and beyond.
Helping individuals grow into purposeful, reflective leaders by examining values, choices, and meaning through coursework, coaching, and fellowships.
Addressing moral challenges in health, technology, education, and society by promoting applied ethics as a tool for leadership and justice.
Fostering campus and regional collaboration through service, public programs, and dialogue—connecting Carlow’s values to Pittsburgh’s needs.

Nancy ('73) and Lee Zimmerman make this gift to honor Father Stephen and his commitment to ethics education by the establishment of The Father Stephen Almagno Endowed Fund within the Atkins Center for Ethics. It is their intent that this lecture series will promote ethical decision making and supply attendees from the Carlow University campus community and the public with the tools to make good choices when faced with ethical dilemmas.
