The Campus Laboratory School of Carlow University

DEVOTED TO EDUCATING THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW

About Us

The Campus Laboratory School (CLS) of Carlow University is unique among the education institutions in the Pittsburgh region, as we set out to bring a sense of discovery, and also of service, to our students. CLS offers a distinctive educational opportunity for children Preschool through Grade 8. Early Childhood options include Montessori and Reggio-Inspired preschool programs. Infants and Toddlers are served through the Early Learning Center.

While CLS provides religious instruction and Catholic celebrations, our teachers, staff and students represent many different faiths — all are welcomed, cherished and celebrated here! As a laboratory school, CLS maintains an integral relationship with Carlow University, partnering on educational experiences, professional development and opportunities for pre-service teachers. CLS provides a supportive and challenging learning environment that is devoted to giving every child an uplifting experience:

  • A rigorous, integrated curriculum
  • Authentic and differentiated learning experiences
  • STEAM+ focus for scientific exploration using technology in creative ways
  • Learning Lab for multi-sensory small group instruction focused on literacy and mathematics interventions
  • CLS is a member of Carnegie Mellon’s CREATE Lab satellite network.

ACADEMICS AT CLS

Curriculum and instruction at CLS fosters intellectual curiosity and student creativity through engaging, innovative, hands-on learning that cultivates student voice and leadership opportunities. Faculty use multiple strategies in order to meet the needs of all children, so they have the confidence to be little leaders with kindness always in mind. Outdoor learning spaces are utilized throughout our University campus with our outdoor classroom being a student favorite!

Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) are infused throughout the curriculum. Students are actively engaged and learning occurs in a more natural and sustainable manner.  A teaching artist designs special projects and unique gallery experiences for students.

The Dyslexia and Learning Center, in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Mt. Oliver Intermediate Unit, provides additional supports and interventions for students requiring academic supports. We use a multi-sensory, individualized approach based on diagnostic assessments and benchmark testing and coordinate adaptive technology and universally designed instruction.

As technology becomes a significant part of students’ everyday lives, we are preparing for our students’ future success by integrating technology into CLS, allowing them to engage in new ways, as well as provide richer learning interactions.

Community events form a large part of the social fabric of the school, while athletics and extracurricular programs further enhance the CLS experience!

Whether you are a parent, grandparent or community member, CLS welcomes you to our community and invites you to become a volunteer! All School Volunteers must complete the following steps in accordance with the Diocese of Pittsburgh:
