‘This Could Be It’: SLP Alum Paula Schultz on Finding Her Path at Carlow

After completing her undergraduate studies, Paula Schultz knew she wanted more than a typical graduate program. She was searching for a place where she could grow personally and professionally; somewhere that valued compassion and connection as much as technical expertise.

At Carlow, she found exactly that. According to Paula, the University’s deep-rooted values and supportive community created an environment where she felt seen and encouraged. Her time at Carlow gave her the confidence to embrace new challenges, the perspective to lead with empathy, and the preparation she needed to begin a meaningful career making a difference in the lives of others.

Paula spoke with us, reflecting on her experience at Carlow, how it shaped her journey, and what comes next as she begins her career in speech-language pathology.

What made you choose Carlow for your graduate studies in Speech-Language Pathology?

When I first started exploring SLP programs, I was looking for more than just strong academics — I wanted a program where I could really grow. My first conversation with [Department Chair] Samantha Dalessio and [Director of Clinical Education] Amanda Smith sealed the deal. They spoke with such passion and heart, not just about the coursework but about creating a space where students could become thoughtful, competent clinicians. I remember thinking, ‘This could be it.’

How did Carlow’s program prepare you for your career?

Carlow really understood that I learn best by doing. From day one, we had access to clinical experience through Carlow’s on-campus clinic — the only pro bono SLP clinic in Pittsburgh. Having that immediate exposure to real clients was invaluable. It helped me connect classroom learning to real-world practice and gave me confidence early on.

Were there specific experiences that stood out during your time at Carlow?

My externships were incredibly impactful. I still remember a moment during my school-based externship when one of my clients met all their therapy goals and officially ‘graduated’ from speech therapy. Watching that student’s progress and knowing I played a part in it was unforgettable. My supervisors were equally inspiring. They modeled what it means to lead with compassion, collaboration, and even a sense of humor.

What support did you receive as you prepared to enter the field?

Carlow provided a professional development course that covered everything from writing resumes and cover letters to licensing prep and mock interviews. But what really gave me confidence during my job search was the depth of hands-on experience I had gained. In interviews, I could point to real examples from my externships, and that made all the difference.

How have Carlow’s Mercy values influenced your approach as a clinician?

Carlow’s Mercy values weren’t just words in our coursework. They were modeled every day by our faculty and supervisors. Those values shaped how I see my role as a clinician and how I want to care for others moving forward.

How Will You Create a More Just and Merciful World?

I recently accepted my first position as a travel SLP in southern Oregon, working in a school setting. Looking ahead, I hope to open a private practice one day, maybe even with one of my cohort classmates, where I can build something rooted in empathy, access, and client-centered care.
