Surgical Technology Program

Surgical Technologists play a critical role in every surgical procedure. Graduates of this program will:

  • Paired with your lecture courses, you will observe surgery, learn and practice surgical lab skills and learn the fundamentals of clinical patient care.
  • In addition to the expertise of your clinical instructors, you will work alongside UPMC surgeons, nurses and surgical technologists who will be your preceptor and guide.
  • Unlike similar programs offered by other schools, Carlow students have ample lab and observation sessions in real operating room settings.
  • From heart and vascular to orthopedic surgery, you will learn over 30 different surgical procedures from beginning to end.
  • Your studies culminate in the completion of 120 surgical cases in the operating room—this includes general surgery and at least six different specialties.

Career opportunities for Surgical Technologists

Earning your degree is just the first step on a rewarding career path in surgery. Graduates of this collaborative degree program are uniquely positioned for a Surgical Technology position with UPMC. At UPMC, surgical technologists have eight additional levels on their career ladder, each leading to significant growth opportunities and pay increases. To date, 100% of our graduates have secured employment at UPMC or another healthcare provider prior to graduation.

Admission Requirements and Application Process

The Surgical Technology Program is a limited enrollment program. This means that you are conditionally accepted into the Surgical Tech program providing you pass A&P II and Microbiology with a 2.0 or higher in your second general education semester. Students are permitted to retake these courses once and delay their start to the next semester if unsuccessful on their first attempt.

As part of our program, all students will sit for a certification exam and have a certification prep-course as part of their program to help them prepare.

Students of the UPMC School Of Surgical Technology are eligible to sit for the CERTIFICATION AS A TECH IN SURGERY – CERTIFIED TS-C (NCCT) through NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing) upon graduation.
