Spirit of Carlow: Walking Together into a New Year

Each August, the Carlow community gathers to honor one of its most cherished traditions: the Mass of the Holy Spirit. Since our founding 96 years ago, this celebration has marked the beginning of a new academic year, uniting students, faculty, staff, and friends of the University in joy and anticipation for the journey to come.

The Mass and its surrounding events have come to be called Carlow Day, and over the years it has become so much more than a routine event. It reflects Carlow’s enduring mission to educate ethical leaders who will go on to create a more just and merciful world. It transcends individual beliefs, inviting all members of our community to pause, reflect, and recommit to the values that guide our shared work. It’s a chance to be part of Carlow’s long history and walk together into the year ahead.

A Journey Through History

The day begins with a bagpipe-led procession through campus, a spirited reminder of Carlow’s living history. Campus Lab School students lead the way, symbolizing the idea that Mercy begins with the education of our children. Together, the whole Carlow community walks toward St. Agnes Church, where this year the newly installed Bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, Most Reverend Mark Eckman, will preside at a liturgy rooted in compassion and community.

Following the Mass, the celebration continues with a community barbecue on the Green, sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, whose vision and courage founded Carlow in 1929. Their legacy continues to inspire Carlow’s purpose: teaching students to lead with empathy, act with integrity, and meet the needs of a changing world.

A Joyous Tradition

Carlow Day is one of our most joyous traditions, reminding us that while every new year brings challenges and opportunities, we are stronger when we begin the journey together, grounded in our history, united in our values, and excited for what lies ahead. As we step into a new academic year, we invite you to carry forward the spirit of our Mercy heritage — leading with empathy, acting with integrity, and striving to create a more just and merciful world.

Whether you’re beginning your first semester, returning to continue your journey, or have been with us for many years, this day reminds us that we are all part of something larger than ourselves. See you there!
