Sam is the Middle School (grades 6-8) ELA teacher at Carlow’s Campus Laboratory School. After earning her Bachelor’s of Science in Education at California University of Pennsylvania, Sam taught for a year at Riverview School District before joining the team at Carlow’s Campus School. She also has experience as a literacy tutor that she brings into each class she teaches. She has known since her first day of kindergarten that she wanted to be a teacher. Sam is passionate about providing all CLS students with exposure to a variety of literary works, preparation in analytical and critical thinking skills, and research capabilities. With CLS’ multi-age class style at the Middle School level, this includes presenting various literary works in several different capacities with an array of difficulty levels. She gives students exposure to texts they will see in high school and beyond to help them become confident and capable literary scholars. She provides students with a thorough education in academic writing, exposing them to different methods of researching, formatting, and citing.
Sam and the rest of the MS team make efforts to incorporate real world connections, such as financial literary, digital literacy, and Social Emotional Learning, into their curriculum. In addition to teaching English Language Arts, Sam offers Electives for CLS students such as participation in WPCTE’s English Festival and Film Studies. She strives to help students discover what ways they can best embody Mercy Values in their own lives, and what each Mercy Value means to them personally. Her biggest goal for her students is to guide them in developing their own academic independence, giving them the necessary tools to take on responsibility for who they want to be as both a student and a member of society.
