Dr. Andrea Fairman is an occupational therapist, researcher, and educator with more than 20 years of experience working at the intersection of clinical care, assistive technology, and rehabilitation science. She currently serves as Program Director and Chair of the Occupational Therapy Department at Carlow University, where she leads the development of a dynamic and mission-aligned curriculum focused on occupational justice, equity, and community engagement. Dr. Fairman earned both her Master of Occupational Therapy and PhD in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a licensed occupational therapist, a certified Assistive Technology Professional (ATP), and holds additional credentials as a Driver Rehabilitation Professional (DRP) and Certified Driving Instructor (CDI).

Her clinical and research expertise centers on advancing the independence and participation of individuals with disabilities through innovative technology-based interventions. Dr. Fairman has served as a principal investigator and co-investigator on multiple federally and privately funded projects that explore the use of mobile health systems, smart home technology, and adaptive equipment to support community living and self-management. Her work is especially focused on individuals with spinal cord injuries, spina bifida, and other complex physical disabilities. In addition to her academic and research leadership, Dr. Fairman continues to practice as a clinician through her private adaptive driving and assistive technology services. She provides comprehensive evaluations, driver training, and equipment recommendations to support safe and independent driving for individuals with cognitive, physical, or visual impairments.

At Carlow, Dr. Fairman is committed to cultivating the next generation of occupational therapy professionals who are prepared to lead with compassion, innovation, and cultural humility. She is actively involved in mentoring students, supporting faculty development, and fostering partnerships with healthcare and community organizations across the region. Her leadership is grounded in a deep respect for each individual’s dignity, potential, and right to meaningful participation in society.
