Annual Pottery Marathon Creates Bowls for Just Harvest and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank’s Empty Bowls Dinner in March
Pittsburgh, Pa. –Everyone has heard of “starving artists,” but Carlow University’s Bowls in the Night pottery marathon turns that concept around as it focuses on ceramic artists using their talents to benefit hungry people in our community.
Bowls in the Night will take place on Thursday, January 31, 2019, beginning at 5 p.m. and lasting until 11 p.m., in the ceramics studio on the first floor of Antonian Hall on the Carlow University campus. It is an opportunity for local artists and art students to make clay bowls for Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and Just Harvest’s Empty Bowls Dinner.
“This event not only benefits an incredibly worthy cause, but it is also an opportunity for the students to learn how to use their talents outside of the classroom to serve others,” said Carlow art professor Dale Huffman, who hosts the event each year, is an internationally renowned potter, and has been teaching at Carlow since 1996. He began organizing Bowls in the Night not long afterwards.
The bowls made at this event – on average about 200-250 annually – are provided to the patrons of the Empty Bowls dinner to take home as a keepsake.
The Empty Bowls Dinner will take place on Sunday, March 10, 2019, at Rodef Shalom synagogue, located at 4905 Fifth Avenue in Oakland. It is a simple community meal of soup and bread to help remind people of the one in eight residents of Allegheny County who are facing hunger. The event, which features soup made by some of Pittsburgh’s top restaurants and celebrity soup servers, typically attracts more than 1,500 people and has raised more than $500,000 in the past 22 years to fight hunger in our region.
