Dean shares vaccine information for spring learning activities at health care systems, information on meal plan balances

Dear Students,

Allegheny County continues to experience problematically high case rates, keeping the county in the high-risk category. Details on the “County View” may be found by clicking here. As you close out your fall semester, please continue to treat COVID-19-like symptoms with caution and avoid coming to campus. Please review important information for you to know this week.

New this week:

ACTION NEEDED:

Urgent notice for students engaged in learning activities at health care systems for the Spring 2022 term: With COVID 19 infections again on the rise nationally and globally, changes are occurring that may impact our healthcare partners, requiring them to mandate COVID Vaccine for their employees and others who work and learn in their facilities. These changes will impact you as a student if you have a practicum or internship at any of our healthcare systems.

Many of our regional and national healthcare systems are now requiring COVID 19 vaccination for clinical and experiential learning placements for students. We have contracts with all healthcare systems we use that require us to adhere to their requirements for placement. It is becoming increasingly difficult to facilitate a comprehensive and effective learning experience for those students who are unvaccinated. Although Carlow University does accept valid religious and medical vaccine waiver requests, there is no guarantee that our healthcare agencies will accept those waivers.

The unfortunate consequences for unvaccinated students could be delays in graduation or being unable to complete their program of study. Carlow University will abide by the requirements for healthcare system placement related to COVID 19 vaccination. The best way to protect yourself and others is to be vaccinated, therefore you are strongly encouraged to complete your COVID vaccine series before the spring term begins.

For more information about your individual circumstances, please contact your Department Head or Program Director.

We will host two vaccination clinics as follows:

  • Monday, Dec. 13, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. – Pfizer first, second and booster does.

You may schedule a vaccine appointment by clicking here. If these days and times do not work then you may contact Integrated Health 21 by clicking here or consult the website of the Allegheny County Health Department.

To access Self Service, go to Isadora and click Self Service under Quick Links. Reporting positive COVID-19 Results

All reported positive COVID-19 cases are reflected in the Campus Dashboard. Some have suggested we are not receiving all reported cases and thus our actual rates are higher. If you receive a positive COVID-19 test result, please contact Health Services, 412-578-6474, to provide that data and so that we provide guidance to you.

Report Safety Concerns to Campus Police

The Carlow Police recently received indirect reports of student safety concerns that slowed efforts to provide support. When a concern arises, the best method to fully inform students is to work with Campus Police to gather accurate and detailed information. You may report most effectively by calling campus police at 412-578-6007 (emergency) or 412-578-6005 (non-emergency), by using any emergency blue phone on campus, or using the CampusShield app downloadable to any android or iOS device. Please help us address these issues when they are occurring.

Help Needed? Submit a Care Report

With the beginning of each semester, students occasionally struggle with affordability, academic adjustments, and connecting to the community. If you become concerned about yourself or others, please submit a report and let the Care Team know about any needs, questions or concerns. We are active and will make contact with you, or those you refer, to help. You may also contact the Student Affairs office at 412-578-6293 or .

Please take care of yourself this week as I know this time of year is particularly taxing on students. May your finals preparation go well!

Sincerely,

Timothy P. Phillips, PhD
Vice President of Student Affairs & Dean of Students
