Each year, Carlow Day begins with a tradition that connects our past to our future: the Mass of the Holy Spirit. Rooted in the University’s Mercy heritage, this celebration invites us to pause, reflect, and begin the academic year with purpose.
As part of this cherished observance, the Carlow community gathers in procession, led by the unmistakable sound of bagpipes, a powerful reminder of the legacy and spirit that continue to shape life at Carlow. The Mass honors the values that have guided generations of students, faculty, staff, and alumni, while renewing our shared commitment to learning, service, and compassion.
A Joyous Tradition
The Mass of the Holy Spirit remains one of Carlow’s most meaningful and uplifting traditions. It is a moment to come together as one community, grounded in faith, inspired by scholarship, and energized for the year ahead.
We are honored to welcome Bishop Mark Eckman as celebrant for this year’s liturgy, joining us for a celebration that reflects both the depth of our tradition and the vibrancy of our present. The celebration also includes the blessing of students, faculty, and staff as we begin a new year together. Carlow Day is more than a ceremony. It is a shared experience of belonging, hope, and academic renewal.
Following the Mass, the celebration continues with a community barbecue on the Green offering time to connect, celebrate, and enjoy the company of friends, classmates, and colleagues across campus.
An Invitation to Celebrate
All members of the Carlow University community are warmly invited to take part in this special Carlow Day tradition. Mass will begin at 10:00 in St. Agnes Center but all are invited to join the procession, beginning at 9:45 on the Green, as it makes its way down the driveway and along Fifth Avenue to Saint Agnes.
Join us as we honor our history, celebrate our Mercy mission, and step into the 2026 academic year together with renewed energy and intention. From the opening bagpipe procession to the Mass celebrated by Bishop Eckman and the festive community barbecue that follows, Carlow Day offers a meaningful and memorable way to begin the year as one community.
