HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS

Richard Blanco
Fifth Presidential Inaugural Poet

Selected to be the Inaugural Poet by President Barack Obama for his second inauguration in January 2013. In 2023, Blanco was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Biden from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Born in Madrid to Cuban exile parents and raised in Miami in a working-class family, Blanco’s personal negotiation of cultural identity and the universal themes of place and belonging characterize Blanco’s many collections of poetry including his most recent, Homeland of My Body, which reassess traditional notions of home as strictly a geographical, tangible place that merely exist outside us, but rather, within us. He has also authored the memoirs For All of Us, One Today: An Inaugural Poet’s Journey and The Prince of Los Cocuyos: A Miami Childhood. Blanco has received numerous awards, including the Agnes Starrett Poetry Prize, the PEN American Beyond Margins Award, the Patterson Prize, and a Lambda Prize for memoir. He was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and has received numerous honorary degrees. Currently, he serves as Education Ambassador for The Academy of American Poets and is an Associate Professor at Florida International University. In April 2022, Blanco was appointed the first-ever Poet Laureate of Miami-Dade County. Blanco is a longtime mentor for students in Carlow’s Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in creative writing program.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

The gown, the cap, and the hood—representing the major components of the academic dress—are a ceremonial inheritance from the medieval universities of the 11th and 12th centuries, where dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. The academic dress worn by those participating in today’s academic processional symbolizes the level of their academic attainment and the institution they attended.

GOWN

Although the gown is more frequently black, certain universities have authorized the use of colored gowns. The bachelor’s and master’s gowns were originally fashioned from
black serge. The yoke for the bachelor’s gown is designed to be worn open or closed. Its
sleeves are very long with square ends, and the front part has an arc cut-away. The arms protrude through the slit at the elbow. The gown for the doctor’s degree was originally made of wool, serge, or silk with an open front faced with wide velvet panels. The sleeves are loose and bell-shaped with three bars of velvet in black or the color of the discipline in which the doctorate was obtained.

CAP

The standard cap is the mortarboard, usually the color of the gown. The tassel is black
for the baccalaureate and the master’s degree and is worn over the left front quarter of the cap. The tassel for the doctor’s mortarboard is of gold thread. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the right side of the cap until the moment the degree is conferred by the president.

HOOD

The most outstanding feature of the academic dress is the hood. It is usually worn only for the master’s and the doctor’s degrees. The doctor’s hood is longer than the master’s hood and has distinguished panels. The college or the university granting the degree is indicated by the color of the hood lining. The velvet trim of the hood indicates the field in which the degree was granted.

COLORS

The colors that are worn by the faculty, staff, and students receiving advanced degrees
reflect the degree that has been earned and the institution that awarded the degree. The color of the band around the hood signifies the area of study, and
the colors inside the hood are the colors of the institution that awarded the degree.

PRESIDENTIAL MACE

The mace symbolizes the authority of the presidential office. The first maces emerged
in the Middle Ages as formidable, practical weapons that were used to protect the
king’s person, borne by the Sergeants-at-Arms. By the 14th and 15th centuries, the mace became less practical and more decorative and ceremonial; many were gilded with precious metals and some featured elaborate scrollwork, engravings, and precious jewels and baubles. The Carlow University mace is 42 inches tall and made of lacquered walnut wood. Its handle features decorative brass gilding; at the top of the mace
head, the presidential seal is rendered as a double-sided brass medallion. In modern
academic processions, the mace is carried by a distinguished faculty member.

THE CARLOW UNIVERSITY SEAL

The seal of Carlow University represents those values and ideas expressed by the Sisters of Mercy and the university’s mission statement. The triangle in the center represents the Trinity. At each point, the
triangle melts into the inner circle (a symbol of eternity) yet remains enclosed within it, uniting the two images. At the center of the seal is the Pennsylvania keystone and the Carlow motto “Ad Superna, Non Superba” or “To the Eternal, not the Perishable.” On either side of the triangle is the lion rampant, a detail taken from the coat of arms of Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy. Wisdom (the five-pointed star) and knowledge (the Roman lamp) have a place above and below the keystone. The Irish cross (a reminder of the Irish heritage of the Mercy sisters) and a circle (symbolizing eternity) sit at either side.

CARLOW SCHOLAR

A Carlow Scholar is a student who has successfully completed the four academic components of the Honors Program.

ROSE MARIE BEARD HONORS SCHOLAR

Rose Marie Beard Honors Scholars are honors students who were identified in their first year and have completed all the extra requirements, demonstrated high academic achievement and leadership, and whose personal and professional lives reflect a strong work ethic, an indomitable spirit, and compassion.

LATIN HONORS

Latin Honors are conferred upon those students graduating at the baccalaureate level who have excelled in their coursework. Eligibility for graduation with Latin Honors is computed cumulatively. Students are eligible for graduation with Latin Honors if they meet the following criteria:
Completion of 30 earned Carlow credits with a letter grade.
Cumulative grade point average of: 3.9–4.0: Summa cum laude
3.7–3.89: Magna cum laude
3.5–3.69: Cum laude
