Investigate healthcare, STEM, neuroscience and brain, education and art

Carlow University offers four fun, fast-paced summer workshops for high school students: Prepare to Care, Summer Science Nation, Neuroscience Camp, and, New for 2019, Rising Educators, Graphic Design and Animation! Whether you are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, science or education, you will interact with and learn from professionals in those fields.

Except for the Graphic Design and Animation workshops, the four-day workshops includes three nights spent in the Carlow dorms! Cost includes the four-day workshop, all off-campus transportation, T-shirt, journal, activities, continental breakfasts, as well as lunches and dinners, provided, and residence hall facilities. Need-based financial aid available

There is partial financial aid available if a student qualifies for the PA Free Lunch Program. Please submit either a copy of your free lunch program qualification letter or your 2018 income tax by email or fax to 412-578-8710.

Graphic Design - New!

Are you intrigued by Media Arts?

This workshop is designed for high school students who are interested in studying art or illustration. Students will have the opportunity to learn the introduction to the basics of traditional design elements, and create under the guidance of Carlow instructors within the university’s digital studios. The courses will offer students the opportunity to work with industry standard software for full color digital designs. Along with working on campus, students will be exposed to the culture surrounding Carlow by visiting places such as the Carnegie Museum to study design and sketch.

Animation - New!

Do you want to explore the worlds of Animation?

This workshop is designed for high school students who are interested in studying illustration or animation. Students will have the opportunity to learn the introduction to the basics of traditional animation elements, and create under the guidance of Carlow instructors within the university’s digital studios. The courses will offer students the opportunity to work with industry standard software for frame by frame animation. Along with working on campus, students will be exposed to the culture surrounding Carlow by visiting places such as the Carnegie Museum to study design and sketch.

This workshop is designed for high school students who are considering a career in education. Explore innovative teaching methods, advanced education technology and global learning.

Come explore cool robotic technology, teach young children in a STEM camp, learn about brain-based teaching, and be inspired by incredible teachers and creative classrooms. 

Prepare to Care

Discover the Healthcare Field
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering how the human body works or how you could improve someone’s health or quality of life, the Prepare to Care workshop is for you. 

Healthcare educators and professionals recommend you gain as much hands-on experience as possible— and Carlow University's workshop delivers. During Prepare to Care, you will meet with faculty members, nurses, and other healthcare specialists, researchers, tour healthcare facilities, and learn nursing essentials in Carlow's state-of-the-art Nursing Skills Lab. 

Hands-on activities with Carlow faculty: observe an open-heart surgery or a robotic surgery, work in dissection and anatomy labs, care for "patients" in Carlow's cutting-edge simulation lab, and explore a local hospital. 

Summer Science Nation

Is Science for You?
Have a fascination with biology, chemistry and physics, and wondering how you might make an impact on the world? If you answered yes, then Summer Science Nation is for you!

This program introduces you to career options in science. Through hands-on lab experiments, field trips to Pittsburgh's research and industry facilities, like the McGowan Center for Regenerative Medicine, and meetings with professional researchers, scientists in the field, and educators, you'll see the broad range of opportunities in science that are available. You'll also meet other students, like you, who want to explore a future in science.

Carlow faculty-led labs: anatomy and physiology lab, brains, hearts and eyeballs dissection lab, DNA lab, chemistry labs, and hands-on science workshops in chemistry, biology, physics, and microbiology. 

Neuroscience Camp

Are you a highly motivated student interested in exploring the workings of the brain and spinal cord and careers in neuroscience and medicine?
Learn about the brain, diseases that affect the nervous system, and how medical professionals are trained and improve outcomes for patients.

With hands-on lab experiments, field trips to the McGowan Center for Regenerative Medicine, and meetings with professional researchers, scientists in the field, and educators, you'll see opportunities in biomedical science that are available. Meet other students who want to explore a future in neuroscience as well.

Carlow faculty-led labs: anatomy and physiology lab, brains and hearts dissection lab, case studies on how the brain works, and hands-on lab work to connect the structure and function of the brain.
