Hazing Policy and Report
Comparable to the Harassment Policy in the University Student Handbook and in keeping with our Mercy values of Hospitality and
Sacredness of Creation, the University prohibits the practice of
hazing. "Hazing" is defined as intentionally, knowingly or
recklessly coercing, forcing, or subjecting a person to any of the
following below, on or off campus, for the purposes of either
admission to, continuing in, or enhancing membership with, a Carlow
University organization (broadly defined to include any group at or
affiliated with the University that consists of students, staff,
faculty, or alumni, including fraternities or sororities).
For purposes of this policy, prohibited acts include, but are
not limited to, violation of federal or state criminal law;
consuming any food, drink, alcoholic liquid, drug or other
substance that subjects an individual to a risk of emotional or
physical harm; enduring brutality of a physical nature, including
whipping, beating, branding, calisthenics or exposure to the
elements; enduring brutality of a mental nature, including activity
adversely affecting the mental health or dignity of an individual,
sleep deprivation, exclusion from social contact or conduct that
could result in extreme embarrassment; and enduring brutality of a
sexual nature; enduring any other activity that creates a
reasonable likelihood of bodily injury to an individual.
Any person aware of such actions is to report such awareness to
a University official, including University Police or Student
Affairs office staff. Notwithstanding University policy, applicable
Pennsylvania criminal law may allow for safe harbor, which provides
protection from criminal prosecution to individuals who make an
immediate report of hazing to obtain medical attention for a
victim.
Any violation of this policy shall result in discipline in
accordance with University policy and may include expulsion of a
student or termination of the organization.
