Unique Collaboration Between Two Western Pennsylvania Schools Will Provide More Nurses for the Region

PITTSBURGH, PA – Carla Tomas, nursing educator and clinician, has been named coordinator of the Carlow University nursing program that will be offered at Saint Vincent College beginning in fall 2019.

This collaborative program is an innovative partnership between Carlow and Saint Vincent that was approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing last spring. Through this partnership, Saint Vincent faculty will teach the non-nursing courses that will satisfy the core curriculum, and Carlow nursing faculty will teach the nursing curriculum. Prospective students will be enrolled as Saint Vincent students for their first two years. While living and studying at Saint Vincent their last two years, students will be Carlow students and will be awarded their BSN degree by Carlow.

Tomas has been a faculty member in the Carlow University undergraduate bachelor of science in nursing program (BSN) since 2012, and served as the interim coordinator at Saint Vincent College since fall 2018.

“Carla is an outstanding nurse educator and clinician, dedicated to helping her students become competent, caring nurses,” said Dr. Lynn E. George, dean of the Carlow University College of Health and Wellness.  “Carla is part of a team of professionals that have facilitated the successful preparation of Carlow graduates for nursing practice.”

“On behalf of the Boyer School faculty and staff, I am very pleased to welcome Carla Tomas to the Saint Vincent community,” said Dr. Stephen Jodis, dean of the Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing. “I have been very impressed with her ideas for developing this program and her enthusiasm about bringing nursing to the Saint Vincent campus.”

One measure of the success of Carlow’s nursing program and its graduates is through the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), the nationwide licensing exam for nurses. Carlow has had the highest NCLEX first-time pass rate in the Pittsburgh area for the past five years, including a perfect 100-percent pass rate the past two years.

“I am excited to lead this program and am looking forward to enhancing the partnership between Carlow and Saint Vincent,” said Tomas, who earned her BSN from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and her master of science in nursing (MSN) from Waynesburg University, and is currently enrolled in a graduate program at Carlow that will culminate with a doctoral degree.

The Carlow – Saint Vincent nursing collaboration will take advantage of the existing partnership between Saint Vincent and Excela Health, and will showcase the College’s state-of-the-art facilities, highlighted by the newly-constructed Liberatore Human Anatomy Laboratory in the James F. Will Engineering and Biomedical Sciences Hall, as well as a new simulation lab to be constructed.
