SUMMARY:CURE Online Event: Supporting Autistic Clients with Mike Elliot
DESCRIPTION:This presentation gives clinicians practical\, evidence-informed skills for recognizing probable autism in clients\, mapping their sensory profile\, and adapting talk therapies and trauma work to be accessible and safe for autistic people. It covers observable signs that should prompt autism-informed care\, a hands-on sensory-mapping exercise\, concrete therapy adaptations (language\, structure\, pacing\, and sensory supports)\, and trauma-informed approaches for processing harms tied to growing up autistic in a neurotypical world. Emphasis is on measurable clinical moves you can apply immediately and on when to refer for specialist assessment or allied supports. \nFollowing this presentation participants will be able to: \n\nlist at least five observable/clincial clues that increase suspicion of autism in adults and youth and explain why each clue is clinically relevant.\nuse a brief sensory-mapping exercise and identify ≥3 sensory triggers and ≥3 sensory supports/strategies for a sample client case.\ndescribe and demonstrate at least three concrete therapy adaptations and state when each adaptation is likely to be helpful.\nidentify three trauma-related risks linked to growing up autistic in a neurotypical world and outline a trauma-informed response plan including at least two specific intervention adjustments.\n\n  \nSpeaker Bio: \nMike is the Clinical Director at Elliot Counseling\, a group private practice in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh\, which specializes in ADHD\, Autism\, Attachment\, Trauma\, Dissociation and Plurality\, and LGBTQIA+. He has a BS in Computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh and a MS in Professional Counseling from Carlow University. He has done post graduate training at the Albert Ellis Institute\, The Gestalt Institute of Cleveland\, Creative Mindnfulness Institute\, and Somatic Experiencing International. He is trained in a variety of trauma modalities include Gestalt Therapy\, EMDR\, Emotional Freedom Techniques\, and Flash. He is currently training in Somatic Experiencing and is at the intermediate level. He is certified in EMDR and is an EMDRIA Approved Consultant and Trainer (both basic and advanced). He is on the board of the Tristate Gender Collaborative\, a former member of the mental health committee of the Trans YOUniting Conference\, and a former president of the Greater Pittsburgh Counseling Association.

These experiences can significantly impact behavior\, learning\, and relationships. This interactive training empowers educators with the knowledge\, skills\, and tools to create trauma-informed learning environments that promote safety\, connection\, and resilience. \nParticipants will explore the impact of trauma on brain development and student behavior\, learn practical strategies for fostering emotional regulation and positive relationships\, and develop classroom practices that support all learners; especially those affected by trauma. His areas of expertise include parent-family-community engagement\, school performance and attendance initiatives\, and non-profit communication strategies. Dr. Ken is the Project Director for the HRSA-funded CURE program. The program seeks to provide MSW and PsyD students with hands-on interprofessional\, interdisciplinary experience working with vulnerable populations in underserved areas during their field experiences. He is also the Co-Director of Carlow’s Strength-Based Mental Health grant where he helped to develop the new School Social Work specialization. Dr. Ken is PI of the Carlow Community Scholars Program funded by Senator Casey’s congressional appropriations. The program aims to support Carlow students who are aging out of foster care or who have experienced homelessness. \nDr. Ken was the former Assistant Director of the University of Pittsburgh Office of Child Development (OCD). He researched\, developed\, and implemented programs that target children and families transitioning into kindergarten while reducing chronic absence. His blend of research to practice was demonstrated through the development of a trademarked brand for kindergarten and a website with practical tools and resources for school transition which was recognized by National Head Start as a “Promising Practice”. Ken was featured as an Emerging Leader by the Harvard Family Involvement Network of Educators\, honored by Pittsburgh Magazine as one of the region’s “40 under 40”\, and is the author of several articles\, book chapters\, and a children’s book. Ken has been an invited speaker and trainer with over 100 national presentations that focused on kindergarten transition\, utilizing technology to improve outcomes for families and children\, and using decision-making science and branding to improve the reach of non-profit organizations. \nDr. Smythe-Leistico possesses a Doctorate in Education from the University of Pittsburgh\, a Master of Social Work from the University of Alabama\, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.

This session blends practical strategies with self-awareness to help build trust\, reduce harm\, and nurture community belonging. Don’t miss out on this chance to participate in this important conversation! \nShannon Jenkins\, program deliverer at Awaken Pittsburgh\, has had two life events that have placed her squarely in the experience of life-before and life-after: cancer and the loss of mobility as-she-knew-it at age twelve\, and the death of her brother when she was 27. Both carved the paths she would take to working with neurodivergent learners and the gravitation to mindfulness practice. Shannon began teaching neurodivergent learners in 1999\, and has worked as a caseworker for non-profits and government agencies as well. She has been in a relationship with meditation and mindfulness practice for 11 years. Shannon finds putting hands in soil\, petting animals\, laughter\, silliness\, movement\, and deep hugs an important part of this practice. DESCRIPTION:This presentation provides depth and breadth into the intricacies of infant and early childhood mental health with a focus on Neurodevelopment and how those who work with children and families can support them in the best way possible for a healthy social-emotional trajectory. This presentation is best for those who would benefit from an introductory look at all of the topics that go into supporting infant and early childhood mental health. \nFollowing this presentation participants will be able to: \n\napply the concepts of Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health to their various fields of study and work.\nidentify 3 cues that infants may give to show distress\nlabel and identify areas of trauma and how they show up in a developing child.\nname and identify the brain pathways necessary for fight\, flight freeze response.\nexplain co-regulation and note its importance for building resilience.\n\nSpeaker Bio: \nErin Troup is a Licensed Professional Counselor and the owner of Sprout Center for Emotional Growth and Development\, LLC a private practice in Pittsburgh\, PA specializing in early childhood social emotional needs\, particularly attachment\, grief & loss\, trauma and anxiety. The practice has over 20 gifted clinicians and specialists serving over 300 children per year. After leaving the Central Pennsylvania area to continue to pursue her passion for work with children and families; Erin earned her undergraduate degree in psychology and child development from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She attended Chatham University for her MS in counseling and earned her Infant Mental Health Certificate in Pennsylvania’s first Infant Mental Health cohort. \nErin has worked in the fields of Mental Health\, Early Intervention and Behavioral Health service for over 20 years. She has presented on a variety of topics including mental health\, grief and loss\, social emotional and child development throughout the United States; but she calls Pittsburgh Pennsylvania home. In addition to clinical work\, consultation and training\, Erin provides clinical and reflective supervision to a variety of individuals and agencies who share the great passion of child and family work. \nErin is currently the board Treasurer for The Pennsylvania Association for Infant Mental Health\, An Adjunct instructor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh (PITT)\, a member of the Pennsylvania State Advisory Council on Early Education and Care\, and a member of The Association for Death Education and Counseling. Erin’s proudest Achievement by far is the title of “Fun Aunt” to upwards of 15 children who she has been fortunate to share time\, space and growth with.

Nourbakhsh. \nThe Summer Institute is a special three-day program for doctoral students in Carlow’s EdD program. One of those days is open to the public and graduate students/area educators. \nClick Here to Register >> \nIllah R. Nourbakhsh is Kavcic-Moura Professor of Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University\, inaugural Executive Director of the Center for Shared Prosperity\, and co-director of the Community Robotics\, Education and Technology Empowerment Lab. He was the Inaugural K&L Gates Professor of Ethics and Computational Technologies. He obtained his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University. In 2009 the National Academy of Sciences named him a Kavli Fellow. In 2013 he was inducted into the June Harless West Virginia Hall of Fame. He was previously Robotics Group Lead for NASA/Ames during the MER landings\, and is a retired civil servant\, NASA GS15/10. In 2019 he was named a Hastings Fellow. He has co-authored textbooks and popular literature\, including Turn Left\, AI and Humanity\, Robot Futures\, and Parenting for Technology Futures. He has authored articles for The New Yorker and Foreign Affairs\, in addition to academic journals and book chapters. He is a trustee of the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation\, Winchester Thurston School and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Environmental Health Project. He is a Director at Open Planet\, a London-based Community Interest Corporation\, and also President and a director at Friends of Open Planet\, a 501(c)3 based in the United States. \nAI\, Education and Humanity Keynote Presentation\nThe maturation of artificial intelligence is transforming work and education at a rapid pace. How will the advances in human intelligence affect our lives in the future? How can machine learning and robotics be deployed to support\, rather than detract from\, student learning in college and from social welfare and human empowerment? Graduates of our educational institutions will shape our robot future and help us understand and manage the ethical implications of artificial intelligence. Promotion of technology fluency—the ability to be a developer and shaper\, rather than merely a consumer\, of these technologies—is the key to student success and personal fulfillment in the decades of change ahead.
