SUMMARY:Professor Maria McKenna: Hesburgh Lecture on Youth Civic Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Carlow University will welcome Professor Maria McKenna of the University of Notre Dame on Thursday\, March 26 at 6:00 p.m. in the Gailliot Center for a Hesburgh Lecture titled “Youth & Young Adult Civic Engagement in a Complicated World.” \n\n\nRooted in Carlow’s Catholic Mercy tradition — which calls the University community to educate for justice\, ethical leadership\, and service to the common good — this public lecture invites reflection on how institutions of higher education can cultivate informed\, compassionate civic participation in an increasingly complex world. \n\n\nDrawing on more than two decades of research with youth and college students\, McKenna will explore how young people understand education\, community development\, and civic responsibility today. Through photography\, research insights\, and dialogue\, she will examine how colleges and communities can support the development of healthy\, sustained civic engagement among the next generation. \n\n\n“At Carlow\, we believe higher education carries a responsibility not only to prepare students for careers\, but also prepare them for thoughtful participation in civic life\,” said Dr. Matthew Gordley\, Interim Provost and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “This lecture reflects our ongoing commitment to forming graduates who lead with integrity\, engage their communities\, and advance the common good.” \n\n\nThe Hesburgh Lecture Series\, sponsored by the University of Notre Dame\, brings distinguished faculty to communities across the country to share scholarship and foster meaningful dialogue around contemporary challenges. Carlow’s hosting of this lecture underscores its dedication to creating spaces where faith\, reason\, and public life intersect in service to justice and human dignity. \n\n\nThe event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
