Girls Left Out: Intersections of Discrimination in Secondary Education

October 6, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

The Social Justice Institutes logo contains those words in black print on a white background.
Why are Black girls in Pittsburgh schools ten times more likely to be referred to juvenile justice than their white peers? Why are Black girls in Pittsburgh schools cycled through the criminal justice system for non-violent offenses at a higher rate than their non-Black peers? Join the Social Justice Institues for a frank discussion on the ways racism and misogyny interact to create a hostile, fraught environment for Black girls in what Dr. Monique Morris argues should be a “place for healing rather than punishment,” and ways to mitigate pre-existing biases in educational settings.
Free and open to the public.
Panelists:

Dr. Elizabeth Miller – full list of titles

Dr. Kathi Elliot – Executive Director of Gwen’s Girls

Dr. Lisa Pickett – Literacy Coordinator at Pittsburgh Public Schools
