Carlow University has received two grants from a private charitable foundation totaling $113,000. One of the grants will go towards establishing the Sister Mary Paul Hickey Educator Development Project.

$113,000 in Grants Benefit Campus Laboratory School and Education Department
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Carlow University has received two grants, totalling $113,000, from a private charitable foundation.
The grants will be used to benefit The Campus Laboratory School of Carlow University, a pre-K through 8th grade school located on the university’s campus, Carlow’s nursing program, as well as Carlow’s Department of Education. One of the grants is an award for $68,000 that Carlow will use towards specific projects related to scholarships, an Outdoor Learning Classroom and Mobile Maker Space for the Campus Laboratory School, as well as the university’s nursing simulation lab. The other grant – for $45,000 – is a new grant for a special project titled the Sister Mary Paul Hickey Educator Development Project.
“Sister Mary Paul was the founder of the Campus Laboratory School and served as principal for more than 40 years. Sister Mary Paul had a legacy of service and innovation, which focused on professional development of teachers,” said Keely Baronak, EdD, executive director of the Campus Laboratory School and chair of the Department of Education at Carlow. “This grant will be used to build on her legacy of excellence in education while honoring her memory.”
The Sister Mary Paul Hickey Educator Development Project has three parts all focused on professional growth for teachers: workshops designed to support and enhance teacher’s professional development; research scholarships for teachers; and graduate scholarships for students in need.
Through this grant, the workshops will be offered throughout the year and led by Carlow University faculty, staff, and Campus Laboratory School teachers. These workshops are designed to promote professional development of teachers and will be connected to continuing education credits.
The research scholarships will be awarded to educators at The Campus Laboratory School and Diocesan Schools to conduct personalized professional development that will improve methods of teaching and improve leadership skills. Scholarships will be competitively reviewed and awarded to support attendance/presentations at regional conferences, curriculum training, advanced graduate coursework, travel abroad, or specific research projects within the classroom.
The scholarships for graduate students are designed for students seeking certification in early childhood or reading and who demonstrate financial barriers to degree completion and/or certification. These scholarships will be awarded by the Education Department and will include an application process open to any qualified student.
“In addition to honoring Sister Mary Paul’s legacy, these grants will improve the quality of education for students in western Pennsylvania,” said Baronak. “We are delighted that this foundation recognized this important objective and has agreed to support Carlow University, the Campus Laboratory School, and teachers in our region.”
