Help children with special needs reach their full potential

The Early Childhood Education with Special Education Certification program at Carlow focuses on nurturing the dignity, worth and uniqueness of children with special needs from birth to fourth grade. You will learn to address the needs of children with a wide variety of mental, physical, social, emotional and behavioral disabilities in multiple settings.

Rooted in constructivism, the program is guided by child development pedagogy and early learning standards, and advocates for best 21st-century learning practices. Students utilize the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s three core considerations when planning learning environments: child development and learning theory, individual appropriateness and cultural importance. The program is guided by the NAEYC’s Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators, Power to the Profession and the Pennsylvania Department of Education‛s Teacher Certification Competencies.

You will take additional special education courses and participate in special education practicum experiences and student teaching placement with children with unique needs.

Employment of special education teachers is projected to grow 6% from 2014 to 2024, according to career database MyPlan.com. Many job opportunities will stem from the need to replace teachers who leave the occupation.
