Psychology Minors:
Minor in Psychology - 18 Credits
The
Minor in Psychology allows students to sample from a variety of psychology
courses. This minor requires 18 credits in Psychology, including the following:
PY101
Introduction to Psychology
At least
nine credits must be at the 200 level or higher. Transfer students must take at
least nine credits at Carlow University.
Note:
Only courses with a “PY” designation count toward the minor in psychology.
Child Development Minor for Non-Psychology Majors – 18
Credits
The
Minor in Child Development is designed for non-psychology majors who are
interested in exploring the biological, behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and
social factors that shape child development (psychology majors may choose a
concentration in child development). A minimum of 18 credits are required,
including PY-101, PY-122, and at least 6 additional credits in human
development. See specific courses in the undergraduate course catalog. At least
nine credits must be at the 200 level or higher.
Transfer
students who wish to transfer coursework from other institutions for this minor
must obtain approval for the transfer credit from the Director of the
Undergraduate Psychology Program. Transfer students must take a minimum of 12
credits at Carlow, six of which are in human development.
Counseling Minor for Non-Psychology Majors - 18 Credits
The minor in counseling is offered to students who are not majoring in psychology (those who major in psychology may take a concentration in counseling). The purpose of this minor is to provide pre-professional level knowledge and skills that will assist those interested in the helping professions such as social work, nursing, education, sociology, human resources, etc.
The minor requires a total of 18 credits, including PY-101 and at least 9 credits in counseling psychology courses. See specific courses in the undergraduate course catalog.
Transfer students who wish to transfer course work from other institutions for this minor must obtain approval for the transfer credit from the University. Transfer students must take a minimum of 9 credits at Carlow, six of which are in counseling.
Crisis and Trauma Minor for Non-Psychology and Social Work Majors - 18 Credits
Studies in the area of Crisis and Trauma provide a foundational focus ranging from immediate crisis assessment, intervention, and management through more specific issues such as child abuse prevention and treatment and partner violence as well as investigating the impact of trauma for individuals and families. The minor in Crisis and Trauma provides students with a solid foundation in theory and research pertaining to crisis, abuse and trauma. This is an interdisciplinary minor between the Psychology and Social Work departments.
A minimum of 9 credits in the trauma and crisis coursework must be taken at Carlow University. See specific courses in the undergraduate course catalog.
Minor in Behavioral Neuroscience
The Minor in Behavioral Neuroscience is designed for students who
are not majoring in Behavioral Neuroscience. It is of particular interest to
Psychology, Biology, and Chemistry majors who would like to focus on Behavioral
Neuroscience without majoring in this area. However, other majors are welcome
to take this minor, which gives students preparation in all three disciplines
(psychology, chemistry, & biology) and some beginning groundwork in
Neuroscience. A minimum of 20 credits are required as follows: PY/BIO
230I or BIO/PY 230, NEU 220, BIO 110, PY 101, PY 280, CHM 111, CHM 113. A
minimum of ten credits in the minor must be taken at Carlow University.
