Admissions for Doctor of Nursing Practice

Admissions Information

Applicants to the Carlow University Doctor of Nursing Practice program must have completed the following requirements for admission:

  • Graduate of an NLN or CCNE accredited Bachelor of Science Nursing program
  • Master's Degree in Nursing with a GPA ≥ 3.0000 on a 4.0000 scale*
  • Ability to meet both University and clinical agency health requirements
  • Completed graduate program application form with application fee or online application
  • Official transcripts from all previous undergraduate and graduate institutions which verify a B grade or higher in a graduate level statistics course 
  • Documentation of verified clinical practice hours from Master's program or certificate on university letterhead
  • Copy of current active unencumbered registered nurse license
  • Current Curriculum Vitae or resume
  • Two letters containing academic or professional recommendations - from a former faculty member who can document your ability to complete doctoral level work and/or an employment supervisor who can describe your professional accomplishments
  • Evidence of scholarly writing - a 2-page writing sample which identifies goals for doctoral education including:
    • Personal philosophy of nursing practice;
    • A written statement of an area for study that is related to the AACN DNP Essentials; and
    • A discussion of how completion of the degree will enable the applicant to further contribute to the profession.
  • An interview with the Doctoral Nursing Admissions Subcommittee.
  • International students: Submission of an official score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required.

Applicants needing writing assistance will be referred to the Carlow University Graduate Skills Prep Course and the Center for Academic Achievement

*Applicants with graduate degrees in other disciplines will be individually evaluated by the Admissions Committee. Additional Master's-level courses may be required to meet essential competencies. Any admitted student whose previous coursework is considered deficient in any areas will meet with his/her advisor to design a plan to address the deficiencies, approved by the DNP committee.
