What Can You Do With a Communication Degree?

The media landscape is changing rapidly, which means communication professionals no longer need to be versed in just one kind of media. They need to be prepared to think critically about how messaging is communicated strategically in a dynamic social and technological landscape.

As a result, the job market for individuals who are prepared for these complex roles is favorable. The US Bureau of Labor and Statistics projects 6% job growth for media and communication occupations between 2016 and 2026. If you are looking for a career that will pique your interest and set you up for long-term success, majoring in communication could be the right fit for you.

Faculty News and Highlights

Jennifer Snyder-Duch, Program Chair, Communication Department

For the third year in a row, Jennifer Snyder-Duch is teaching a course for the Women and Gender Studies (WGS) program. Dr. Snyder-Duch developed this course in consultation with the Strong Women Strong Girls (SWSG) directors and WGS faculty to help support students who are mentors in Carlow's SWSG chaper.

Jim Kelly, Director of Field Education, Department of Social Work

In partnership with the Saturday Light Brigade Radio, Inc., Jim Kelly and Dr. Snyder-Duch hosted students at a summer camp at Carlow University to prepare them as members of the first ever Youth Participatory Budget Council in Pittsburgh. The program was initiated by Councilman Corey O'Connor to help engage young people in local government.

Michael Balmert, PhD, Professor and Former Chair, Communication Department

Michael Balmert is now teaching the new Leadership and Social Change Capstone course. It is a community-based course designed in partnership with Carlow's Social Justice Institutes and the Center That Cares in Pittsburgh's Hill District. This course gives students the opportunity to conduct asset mapping surrounding the issue of gun violence in the Hill District.
