Cross Country travels to Michigan for NAIA Great Lakes Challenge

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. --- Carlow University men's and women's cross country traveled to Michigan this weekend for a significant NAIA meet Saturday.

Aquinas College hosted the event, and the women's 5k and men's 8k races were run at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids.

The races were divided into "maroon" and "white" groups to split up the large field, which included a number of NAIA top 25-ranked institutions.

The Carlow women's team finished 15th of 17 in the competitive field of 148 runners in the "white" race.

Carlow's sophomores took the lead on the course. Rachel Jones (Holbrook, Pa.) led the team with a time of 21:45 for an overall place of 53. Kaitlynn Melvin (Belle Vernon, Pa.) finished in 21:50 and Sydney Achtzehn (Greensburg, Pa.) ran 24:10 to finish in the top three for Carlow.

Mount Vernon Nazarene University won the team title with 64 points, and Lexie Jackson of Indiana University Kokomo took the individual title with a time of 18:50.

Carlow sent two men to compete in the 178-man field.

Evan Antes (SO/North Versailles, Pa.) ran 32:49 and Joseph Palmieri (JR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished in 34:05.

Mount Vernon Nazarene University also won the men's team title with 78 points, and Ben Martin of John Brown University won the individual title with a time of 26:38.

Carlow University hosts the River States Conference Championship on Nov. 9 at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh. The men's race begins at 10:30 a.m. and the women's race begins at 11:30 a.m., with the awards ceremony to follow the completion of the women's race.
