Men’s and Women’s Cross Country open the season at Doug Watts Distance Gala

EDINBORO, Pa. --- Carlow University men's and women's cross country teams kicked of their seasons at the Doug Watts Distance Gala Saturday, hosted by Edinboro University.

The field consisted of primarily NCAA DII and DIII schools, with Carlow being the only NAIA institution that attended the meet.

The women's team placed 9th of 11 teams with an average time of 28:05 for the 6k race.

Larissa Kijowski (JR/Dayton, Pa.) picked up the top time for the Celtics, finishing 13th of 120 runners with a personal best 6k time of 24:35.

Amanda Espy (JR/Oil City, Pa.), Rachel Jones (SO/Holbrook, Pa.), and freshmen Caroline Stevens (Oil City, Pa.) and Bailey Rohm (Uniontown, Pa.) rounded out the top five for the Celtics, finishing with times of 27:22, 28:27, 29:53 and 30:04 respectively.       

Edinboro's Stefanie Parsons won the individual title on the women's side with a time of 22:26. Seton Hill University earned the team title with an average time of 23:53 and five top-10 finishes.

On the men's side, sophomore Evan Antes (North Versailles, Pa.) and junior Joseph Palmieri (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished for the Celtics in the 71-man field.

Antes finished in 33:41 and Palmieri came in at 34:07 in the 8k race.

Edinboro's Colton Cassel won the individual title for the men's race, finishing in 26 min. flat. Edinboro swept the team title as well, with six runners finishing in the top 10 with an average time of 26:38.

Carlow travels to the Lock Haven University invitational Saturday, Sept. 21.
