Volleyball opens season with two wins at Penn State Beaver Tip-Off Tournament

MONACA, Pa. --- Carlow University volleyball opened its season with back-to-back wins at the USCAA Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by Penn State Beaver on Friday.

The Celtics (2-0, 0-0 RSC, 2-0 USCAA) won the first game against Penn State Greater Allegheny (0-1), 3-0.

Each team kept the score close throughout the first two sets. In the first set, Carlow fell behind early but put together a seven-point rally to take a 13-10 lead.

The teams traded leads four times after that, with Carlow coming out on top, 26-24. The Celtics took the second set in much the same fashion, tying the score five times before taking the second set down to the wire and winning, 26-24.

Carlow made quick work of the Lions in the third set, jumping out to an early 8-2 advantage and never relinquishing that lead to win, 25-12.

Cache Street (JR/Wilmerding, Pa.) had 11 kills in the game, and freshman Sabrina Skukalek (Sewickley, Pa.) added 27 assists. The Celtics had a .375 hitting percentage as a team in the third set.

Carlow prevailed in the second game of the day, defeating Penn State Mont Alto (0-1), 3-1.

The Celtics battled back from a deficit in the first set, but ultimately fell, 27-25. Carlow swept the next three sets, 25-23, 25-15 and 25-12 to secure the win.

Freshman Katie Tarasovich (Cranberry Twp., Pa.) had 15 kills for a .324 hitting percentage, and Skukalek had 28 assists. Three Celtics added double-digit digs in the four-set match.

Carlow competes in the semifinal match of the tournament Saturday, Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. If they win, the Celtics will advance to the championship game at 6 p.m.
