MIDDLETOWN, Ohio --- Carlow University volleyball looks to fill key positions this season, as the team earned 23 votes in the 2019 River States Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll the league announced on Aug. 9.

The Celtics went 8-20 overall, 3-13 RSC last season and lost several players in the lineup, including USCAA All-American Second Team honoree Michaela Koran, who led the league in aces (40) last year.

Head coach Julie Gaul is back for her 19th season leading the team and returns several starters, including outside hitter Haley Chiusano (SO/Pittsburgh, Pa.), and middle hitters Cache Street (JR/Wilmerding, Pa.) and Kacie Lach (SR/Moon Twp., Pa.). Gaul brought in five true freshmen who will make an immediate impact on the court this season.

Indiana University Kokomo, which won three of the last four RSC Championships, received 107 votes in the polling and eight of the possible 11 first-place votes. The Cougars won the 2018 RSC Volleyball Championship and RSC West Division with a record of 34-5 overall, 16-0 RSC. IU Kokomo has won 37 straight RSC regular-season matches dating back to 2016 with back-to-back undefeated conference regular seasons to date. The Cougars have been to the NAIA National Championship four straight years.

Indiana University East was picked second in the preseason poll with 101 votes and the remaining three first-place votes. The Red Wolves are predicted to be the top team from the RSC East Division as the top vote-getter from that side of the conference. IU East was 23-9 overall, 12-4 RSC last year to win the division and take a No. 1 playoff seed.

Carlow volleyball kicks off the 2019 season on the road at the Penn State Beaver USCAA Tip-Off Tournament Aug. 30 and 31.

The Celtics' home opener is set for Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. against USCAA opponent Kent State Tuscarawas. View the complete schedule online here.

The team plays at the newly renovated St. Joseph Athletic and Fitness Center on Carlow University's campus.
