KENNEDY TWP., Pa. --- Carlow University softball dropped its final two games of the regular season against (RV) University of Rio Grande (Ohio) Saturday.
The Celtics (18-18, 8-10 RSC, 1-1 USCAA) dropped the first game of the doubleheader, 10-0, in six innings.
The RedStorm (32-12, 17-1 RSC) scored two runs in the first and a run in the second to take a 3-0 lead.
Rio Grande added four runs on three hits and took advantage of three Carlow errors in the fifth to extend the lead to 8-0.
A solo home run by Michaela Criner and two-run home run by Kelsey Conkey in the sixth sealed the deal for the RedStorm and enacted the run rule to end the game.
Conkey tossed a three-hitter against the Celtics.
Abby Stroud (JR/New Egypt, N.J.) was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and striking out five in 4.1 innings.
The Celtics fared a little better in the nightcap, but still ended up on the losing end of a 12-6 game.
Rio Grande scored first in the top of the first inning, but the Celtics turned around and scored three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Adrianna Gottheld (SO/Charleroi, Pa.) led off with a single to center and Ashley Hoak (JR/Elizabeth, Pa.) drew a walk to put runners on first and second.
Stroud hit a ground out to short to move the base runners ahead, and Tristan Voss (SO/Enon Valley, Pa.) hit into a ground out that allowed Gottheld to score and Hoak to move to third.
Annamarie Osiecki (SO/Erie, Pa.) singled to center to bring in Hoak, and Sofia Papageorge (SR/Beaver Falls, Pa.) drew a walk to put runners on first and second with two outs.
Olivia Hutton (JR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) came in to pinch run for Osiecki, and scored on a two-out single to center by Ciara Murray (FR/Windsor, Ontario) to put the Celtics ahead, 3-1.
The RedStorm scored five runs on seven hits – including another two-run home run by Criner – to gain a 6-3 lead in the top of the third.
Carlow added a run in the bottom of the third off a solo home run by Voss to cut the lead to 6-4 heading into the top of the fourth.
Rio Grande added two more runs off three hits to extend their lead to 8-4, and the Celtics added another run in the bottom of the fifth.
The RedStorm put up four runs on five hits in the top of the sixth, leading 12-5. Carlow tried to put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a run off an RBI single by Papageorge, but the RedStorm shut it down.
Voss was 2 for 4 with two RBI, Murray was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Papageorge was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Osiecki was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs on five hits and striking out two in 2.1 innings of work.
At this time, Carlow has cleared the six-team cutoff to attend the RSC Championships May 2-4 in Vienna, W.Va.
Several regular season RSC games will be played on Sunday to determine the final conference standings.
