Cannon nets game-winner in 2OT

Kristin Seamon -

Matt Cannon scored the game-winning goal in double overtime as the Carlow men’s soccer team topped the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, 2-1, on Monday, Sept. 17, at Highmark Stadium.

The Celtics (3-1/0-0/2-0) grabbed an early lead, when Janvier Ramson (FR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) broke away and fired a one-on-one shot past Bobcats goalkeeper Reese Laurell in the eighth minute.

But Laurell and the Bobcats buckled down from there. The Celtics put three more shots on goal during regulation but Laurell saved them all, allowing Nick Bono to tie the game on a penalty kick in the 36th minute.

Carlow goalkeeper Adam Myers (JR/McKeesport, Pa.) made seven saves, including two thrilling one-on-one stops on a rebounded shot in the second overtime moments before Cannon’s score.

Colt Zappa (JR/McKeesport, Pa.) found Cannon for the golden goal with a through ball to the right corner of the box in the 105th minute.

It was the second career goal for Cannon (SO/Monongahela, Pa.), who scored Carlow’s first goal of the season, against Penn State New Kensington on Sept. 1.

The Celtics travel to Cincinnati Christian on Thursday for their first River States Conference match of the season.
