Celtics make big strides at CMU Fall Shootout

The Carlow men’s golf team improved by 17 strokes from its first performance of 2018 to its second, at the Carnegie Mellon University Fall Shootout, on Sept. 15-16.

The Celtics shot a 369 against Waynesburg on Sept. 7, at Youghiogheny Country Club. At the subsequent 14-team invitational at The Links at Spring Church, they shot two rounds of 352 for a team score of 704 on the par-70, 36-hole course.

Louis Stefanik (SO/Vandergrift, Pa.) shot Carlow’s best total, with a 156 (81-75). He improved six strokes from Saturday to Sunday to finish in a six-way tie for 54th place in the 83-golfer field.

Jake Stariha (FR/Leechburg, Pa.) and Nick Paone (JR/Export, Pa.) also had strong outings. Stariha sliced six strokes off his first round score, and Paone seven, finishing second and third among the Celtics. Stariha shot a 170 (88-82) and Paone a 185 (96-89).

Matthew Del Rosso, of Allegheny College, was the individual medalist, firing a five-under 135.
Washington and Jefferson College was the team champion, shooting 561 (290-271).

The Celtics next compete at the River States Conference Fall Preview, on Sept. 23, at the Belterra Casino Resort and Spa, in Florence Indiana.
