The Carlow women’s soccer team fell, 2-0, to Madonna (Mich.) University in its home opener Saturday, Sept. 1, at Cupples Stadium.
The Celtics (0-3/0-0/0-0) played their third quality opponent in as many games, hosting the Crusaders after being on the road against Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University (3-1) and NCAA Division II Lake Erie College (1-0).
The Crusaders scored both of their goals in the first half, and though the Celtics locked down defensively after the break, they were unable to get their offense going.
Nicolette Voltaggio scored the game-winner in the 13th minute, on a nice through-ball from Megan Verant in the middle. Brianna Mozariwskyj added the insurance goal in the 38th minute, assisted again by Verant in the box.
Madonna took 19 shots, with eight on goal, in the contest. Carlow earned six shots and put two of them on goal, both by Alexa Schwab (JR/Conway, Pa.).
Carlow goalkeeper Lauren Forte (FR/Johnstown, Pa.) made six saves, while Madonna goalie Julia Stewart made two.
Carlow next plays at Westminster College, on Sept. 10.
