Celtics split on opening day at USCAA Tip-Off

The Carlow volleyball team split a pair of matches to open their season at the USCAA Tip-Off Tournament, at Penn State Beaver, on Friday, Aug. 31.

The Celtics (1-1/0-0/1-1) started the day with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-8, 25-17) win against Penn State Greater Allegheny. Then they were edged in a back-and-forth battle by Maine Fort Kent, 3-2 (23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 19-25, 15-17).

In the first match, Michaela Koran (SR/North Olmsted, Ohio) led the Celtics past the Roaring Lions with eight kills and seven assists, and added two serving aces.

Mandy Toman (SR/Beulah, Colo.) had four kills and four aces and Cache Street (SO/Wilmerding, Pa.) had four kills and 2.5 blocks.

Two freshmen made strong debuts. Jenna Albert (FR/Monongahela, Pa.) posted six assists and four aces and Mariah Lomire (FR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) had a team-high four digs.

Koran was strong again in the second match, this time earning 17 kills and 28 assists.

Albert had a team-high 30 assists to go with seven kills. Street had 11 kills and 2.5 blocks, Toman had eight kills and seven digs, and Lomire had 15 digs. Exotica Hall (FR/Yokosuka, Japan) added 12 kills and Haley Chiusano (FR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) eight.

Carlow will be back in action at the second day of the tournament Saturday.
