Carlow men’s soccer team ready for third season

After a week away at training camp at Edinboro University, the Carlow men’s soccer team has returned to campus ready to kick off its third season.

The Celtics host Bethany (W.Va.) College in a scrimmage at 7pm Thursday, at Highmark Stadium.

The official season opener is slated for 3pm Sept. 1, when the Celtics host USCAA opponent Penn State New Kensington, at Cupples Stadium. Immediately following, the Carlow women’s team will take the field for their home-opener against Madonna (Mich.) University.

The Celtics return 15 players from the 2017 campaign, including defender Daniel Nicolaus (Gainesville, Fla.), who has served as a team captain for the past two seasons. Zach Wagner (JR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) is also a veteran who will be returning to the defense after a red shirt season a year ago.

Adam Myers (McKeesport, Pa.), a transfer from Community College of Allegheny County, will bring depth at the goal keeper position and Baldwin High School product Janvier Ramson (FR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) will provide a spark in the attacking third.

Sophomore Matt Cannon (Monongahela, Pa.), who competed on Carlow’s track and field team last year, sophomore Mario Balestreri (Irwin, Pa.), and three more freshmen — Laun Eh (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Franck Kada (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and Dustin Yuhas (Macedonia, Ohio) — also add new talent to the roster.

Carlow will be coached by Marcus Pollidore, who started the program in 2016 and guided the new team to a 5-9 record, including its first River States Conference win. He previously spent 10 seasons coaching the Carlow women’s team to unprecedented success.

Pollidore will be assisted by Carl Zappa, who returns for his third season, and Allen Duda, who is in his first season as the head coach of the Carlow women’s team.
