The Carlow women’s tennis team earned a hard-fought River States Conference victory at Ohio Christian on Thursday, April 19.
With the score tied at 4, Rebecca Walker (JR/Kittaning, Pa.) won the deciding match, 7-5, 7-5, over Lauren Copeland at No. 6 singles to give the Celtics a 5-4 victory.
Carlow (3-4/3-4) also got singles wins from Emily Armstrong (JR/New Kensington, Pa.), Melanie Long (SO/Pittsburgh, Pa.), and Michelene Saliba (JR/New Kensington, Pa.) and a doubles win from Saliba and Walker.
Armstrong (pictured above) had the most dominating victory of the day, defeating Drayah Johnson, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Long edged Athina Peterson, 6-1, 6-5 (10-4) at No. 3 singles and Saliba knocked off Chelsi Mason, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5 singles.
Saliba and Walker teamed to beat Mason and Copeland, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles.
The Celtics also played well and made it close in all four of the Trailblazers’ victories.
Jerika Smith defeated Justina Jacquillard (JR/Scottdale, Pa.), 7-6, 6-3, at No. 2 singles. Kaylee Dickson needed a tie-break to beat Juliana Mamajek (SO/Pittsburgh, Pa.), 5-7, 6-4, 10-4, at No. 4 singles.
Johnson and Dickson beat Armstrong and Jacquillard, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles. Smith and Peterson defeated Long and Mamajek, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles.
The Celtics close their regular season Saturday, at Asbury (Ky.) University.
