The Carlow women’s golf team battled the elements to compete in the River States Conference Championship on Monday and Tuesday, April 16-17, at Lassing Pointe Golf Course, in Union, Ky.

Par for the two-day event was 144, but scores for all competitors were significantly higher than usual due to extreme weather conditions. Temperatures ranged from 30-45 degrees, with snow and winds of up to 25 miles per hour. Total yardage for the tournament was 11,616.

Samantha Stefanik (SO/Apollo, Pa.) led the Celtics with a 249. Lexie Mirenda (SR/Altoona, Pa.), who was named Carlow’s Champion of Character, finished with a 283. Abby Wilczynski (JR/Erie, Pa.) posted a 343. Mirenda improved her score by 17 strokes on the second day, while Wilczynski (pictured above) took off seven strokes.

“I am very proud of the ladies who battled through terrible weather conditions to compete in the RSC Championship,” Carlow head coach Ryan Shank said.

Breanna Nowak, of Indiana University East, was the medalist, defeating Midway’s Kathryn Lawler on the second playoff hole. Nowak and Lawler each finished with a 167.

Midway won the team title, with a combined score of 683. The Celtics finished eighth of nine teams, with a score of 875.

Natalie Abt (SO/Glenshaw, Pa.), Carlow's 2017 USCAA National Champion, was sick and unable to compete.

The Celtics' women close their spring season April 21, at the Grove City Invitational. The Carlow men’s team competes in the RSC Men’s Golf Championship on April 23-24.
