The Carlow softball team swept Waynesburg University in a double header Monday, March 19, at Fairhaven Park.

Abby Stroud (SO/New Egypt, N.J.) threw a complete-game shut out to lead the Celtics (8-5/0-0/5-2) to a 4-0 win in Game 1. She also paced Carlow’s offense in a 5-2 victory in Game 2.

In the first game, the Celtics jumped ahead early. Adrianna Gottheld (FR/Charleroi, Pa.) led off with a triple and scored on a single by Samantha Wampler (FR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the bottom of the first inning.

In the second frame, Sofia Papageorge (JR/Beaver Falls, Pa.) led off with a single and Tristan Voss (FR/Enon Valley, Pa.) immediately followed it up with an RBI-double. Alysa Fairman (FR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) added an RBI-single and Kelsey Geyer (SR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) drove in one more run to give the Celtics a 4-0 lead that would stand the rest of the game.

Stroud scattered five hits with one walk and two strikeouts to move her record to 5-1.

Gottheld went 3-for-3 at the plate and had two stolen bases, and Voss went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in the contest.

Caitlin Suter (SO/Monaca, Pa.) picked up her first pitching win of the season in Game 2. She allowed seven hits while walking one and striking out two in her complete-game performance.

The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. However, it was short-lived.

Kasey Wolford (FR/Lower Burrell, Pa.) led off the bottom of the second inning with a home run to deep center field and the Celtics did not trail again. Carlow added two more runs for a 3-1 lead by the end of the inning, thanks to a single by Danielle Levato (JR/Beaver Falls, Pa.) and RBI-singles by Geyer and Stroud.

The Celtics tallied two more runs in the fifth inning on a walk, an RBI-triple by Stroud, and a Waynesburg error.

The Yellow Jackets were able to get one more run in the top of the seventh, but Suter and her defense worked out of the jam for the victory.

Stroud finished the game going 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBIs.

The Celtics open River States Conference play at Ohio Christian on Friday.
