The Carlow women’s basketball team put up a fight against (RV) IU East on Thursday, Feb. 15, before falling, 73-63.
The Red Wolves took a 26-17 lead in the first quarter, but the Celtics (10-15/5-11/5-3) responded by outscoring IU East, 19-13, in the second quarter to trail just 39-36 at halftime against the No. 2 team in the River States Conference East Division.
The Red Wolves pulled out to a 61-47 lead with a big third quarter, and though Carlow won the fourth quarter, 16-12, it was enough for them to hang on.
Emma Stille (SO/Columbus, Ohio) led Carlow with 18 points, 14 rebounds, and three blocks. Alexis Yanief (SR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 17 points and six boards, and Delaney Daly (SO/Pittsburgh, Pa.) had 15 points.
IU East’s Mackenzie Campbell led all scorers with 20 points. Also for the Red Wolves, Sarah Cook had 16 points and 11 rebounds; Kristen Miller had 12 points, eight assists, six rebounds, and four steals; and Tia King had 11 points and six boards.
Carlow shot 33.3 percent (22-of-66) from the field, 26.3 percent from 3 (5-of-19), and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free-throw line.
IU East shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the field, 31 percent (9-of-29) from 3, and 87.5 percent (14-of-16) from the foul line.
Carlow hosts Rio Grande on Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 17.
