The Carlow women’s soccer team fought to a 4-4 tie in a back-and-forth battle with IU East on Saturday, Oct. 14.
The Celtics outshot the Redwolves, 29-13, and held the advantage 11-4 in corner kicks, but IU East was opportunistic.
Carlow scored a pair of goals 20 seconds apart in the 25th minute to take the early 2-0 lead. Lexie Houk (SO/Racine, Pa.) netted the first on a corner kick taken by Rachel Flory (SO/Huntington Beach, Calif.) and assisted by Malak Shuman (SO/Monroeville, Pa.).
Shuman, who tallied two goals and one assist in the match, scored the second one from inside the 18, assisted by Stacey Sikora (SR/Vandergrift, Pa.).
But IU East stormed back to take a 3-2 lead by the 52nd minute. The Redwolves trailed 2-1 at halftime, after a 35th-minute goal by Chelsea Evans. Dejhanna O’Bryant netted a pair of goals, first from inside the 18 and then from inside the box, in the 49th and 52nd minute.
Shuman tied the game in the 59th minute, with an unassisted goal off a corner kick. However, eight minutes later, O’Bryant completed a hat trick with an unassisted goal and IU East regained the lead, 4-3.
Flory capped the scoring in the 80th minute, on a set piece inside the box, assisted by Alexa Mermigas (SR/Wexford, Pa.).
After 10 more minutes of regulation and two overtime periods, the contest ended in a 4-4 draw. Carlow goalkeeper Lexie Mirenda (SR/Altoona, Pa.) made four of her five total saves during overtime.
Amanda Nicholson made four saves in goal for IU East.
The Celtics next travel to play USCAA opponent Washington Adventist on Monday, Oct. 16, at 4pm.
