Kristina Wallace (JR/Jeannette, Pa.) recorded a hat trick and the Carlow women’s soccer team picked up its first River States Conference win of the season, defeating Brescia, 7-0, on Friday afternoon, at Highmark Stadium.
The Celtics (5-3-1/1-1-1/3-0) essentially put the game out of reach in the first eight minutes, scoring two back-to-back goals. Rachel Flory (SO/Huntington Beach, Calif.) scored in the fifth minute and Wallace followed it up 2:59 later with her first of the night, assisted by Franki Berarducci (JR/West Newton, Pa.) on a cross in the box.
Wallace’s second goal, a left-footed bullet from 20 yards out in the 40th minute, sent Carlow to halftime with a 3-0 lead.
Brescia took just one shot in the contest, midway through the first half, and Carlow goalkeeper Lexie Mirenda (SR/Altoona, Pa.) made the save to preserve her fourth shutout of the season. The Bearcats also took just one corner kick in the match.
Flory and Paige Schindehette (FR/Bethel Park, Pa.) finished with two goals apiece to go with Wallace’s three. Erin Werme (FR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) had an assist on Schindehette’s first goal, which came just 56 seconds into the second half.
The Celtics controlled possession nearly the entire contest, firing 41 shots and putting 27 on goal.
They also earned 13 corner kicks, scoring on one of them. Stacey Sikora (SR/Vandergrift, Pa.) sent a lob in front of the net and Flory headed it in for her second goal, in the 49th minute.
One minute later, Lexie Houk (SO/Racine, Pa.) drilled a hard shot at Brescia goalkeeper Jerrica Kidd, who made a nice save, but Schindehette followed the rebound and buried it in the back of the net for her second goal.
Kidd finished the game with 20 saves for the Bearcats.
Wallace added her third goal, for her sixth of the season to tie Malak Shuman (SO/Monroeville, Pa.) for the team-high, in the 54th minute.
The Celtics next host Midway (Ky.) University on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 4pm.
