The Carlow softball team dropped its USCAA quarterfinal, 2-0, to No. 2 Cleary University on Tuesday afternoon at Firestone Stadium, in Akron, Ohio.
The No. 3 Celtics (17-19-1) remain in the hunt for the championship, and are slated to play No. 4 SUNY Canton in a loser’s bracket contest at 6pm today.
The difference in the quarterfinal game was two swings of the bat by Cougars junior catcher Sierra Burke. Burke hit two solo home runs to left field, in the fifth and the sixth innings.
Righthander Riley Thompson picked up the win for Cleary (30-15), throwing a two-hitter with three walks and two strikeouts.
The Celtics played error-free defense and pitcher Caitlyn Suter (FR/Monaca, Pa.) took the tough loss. Besides Burke’s dingers, she allowed just three hits and one walk, with four strikeouts.
Haley Stedeford (SR/Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Kelsey Geyer (JR/East Pittsburgh, Pa.) had the only two hits for Carlow.
