Celtics fall just short twice on RSC road trip

The Carlow men’s basketball team fell short in two tough River States Conference contests on a weekend road trip Friday and Saturday.

After trailing by three points with 10 minutes remaining, the Celtics (3-16/2-5/0-1) lost to Ohio Christian, 97-78, in Circleville on January 13.  They also gave No. 11 Indiana University East a scare, cutting the Red Wolves’ lead to single digits down the stretch, before falling 91-78 on January 14.

Against OCU, Charlie Scharbo (JR/Jefferson Hills, Pa.) poured in 24 points, grabbed six rebounds and made four blocks. He was one of five Celtics scoring in double figures. Jacob St. George (SO/Monaca, Pa.) had 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Miles Sunder (JR/Jeannette, Pa.) had 13 points and seven rebounds, PJ McLaughlin (SR/Irwin, Pa.) had 10 points and nine rebounds, and Zach Bryan (JR/Irwin, Pa.) scored 11 points.

The Trailblazers controlled the game on the boards, outrebounding the Celtics, 51-33.

Against IU East, Scharbo scored 24 more points, this time as part of a double double. He added 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. McLaughlin added 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists. St. George had 14 points, six steals and four assists.

Carlow outrebounded IU East, 33-24, but the Red Wolves were hot shooting from two (57.4 percent) and three (53.3 percent). When the Celtics were forced to foul in the final minutes, the Red Wolves pulled away. They converted 21 of 21 free throws on the day.

The Celtics next travel to Indiana University Southeast on Friday.
