The Carlow men’s basketball team surged past the University of Rio Grande, 76-53, for its first win and first River States Conference win of the season Saturday, December 3.
The Celtics (1-9/1-1) trailed 30-25 at halftime, but took control in the second half when they outscored the RedStorm, 51-23. Rio Grande (2-8/0-2) had led since an early score of 6-5, but the Celtics regained the advantage for good when a three-point goal by Chance Wright made it 41-38 with 12:54 to play.
Carlow turned in an impressive effort offensively and defensively. The Celtics made 12 steals and forced the RedStorm into 25 turnovers, which they turned into 26 points. They also had their best shooting game of the season, going 31 of 62 from the floor (50 percent), and dominated the paint, where they outscored Rio Grande, 36-14.
PJ McLaughlin (SR/Irwin, Pa.) was Carlow’s leading scorer, with 20 points. Charlie Scharbo (JR/Jefferson Hills, Pa.) had 19 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Jacob St. George (SO/Monaca, Pa.) contributed 12 points and nine assists. Wright (FR/Bethel Park, Pa.) added 11 points and Zach Talley (JR/Finleyville, Pa.) dished five assists.
Rio Grande was led by Wyatt Brewster (15 points), DeVon Price (14 points) and Stanley Christian (nine rebounds).
The Celtics begin a six-game road stretch on Monday, December 5, at Ohio Valley University.
