Education Program
(for Carlow and non-Carlow students)
PROGRAM OVERVIEW

City of Sligo |
Students participating in the program will stay in Sligo, Ireland where they will be assigned to a school, hospital or community setting which provides services to individuals with special needs. Monday - Thursday, students will be transported to these field experiences where they will assist the staff in daily activities. On Fridays, students will reflect and share their experiences with other participants in the morning. Friday afternoon through Sunday evening will include cultural and sightseeing opportunities for students.
THE LOCATION
Sligo, Ireland is the second largest urban area in Connacht (after Galway). It has a population of 18,000 (as of 2006). Sligo is situated in the north west of Ireland set within magnificent scenery of mountain rivers, fronting the Atlantic Ocean. The town is the capital of the North West and is located at the mouth of Sligo Harbour on the Garavogue River. The nearest city of similar size is Derry, located over 80 miles (120kms) away. The town is the administrative, commercial and industrial capital of the County and region.

REQUIRED COURSE
SPED 466 International Field Placement in Special Needs Education
This field placement includes 90 hours of hands-on practical experience with individuals with special needs in Sligo, Ireland. Placement will vary depending upon a student’s discipline of study. Opportunities to interact with a variety of related service providers enhance the experience while offering students multiple perspectives and techniques for enriching the lives of individuals with different abilities. Each student will be placed in a setting for individuals with special needs and be provided with an Irish mentor for guidance.

- Arrive in Shannon – May 17, 2013
- End of Program – June 8, 2013

APPLICATION PROCESS
For Carlow students:
- Attend a Study Abroad 101 session by signing up via the Portal or contacting the Center for Global Learning.
- Meet with the Center for Global Learning to discuss specific application steps.
- Fill out and submit an application (.pdf)
- You will receive further instructions once submitting your application to the Center for Global Learning.
For non-Carlow students:
- Meet with your home institute study abroad office advisor
- Fill out and submit an application (.pdf)
- If you plan to use financial aid, please contact the Center for Global Learning for the appropriate paperwork
