Students who major in sociology may pursue a general sociology major that covers a broad range of sociological topics or they may select a concentration in criminal justice. A minor in sociology and a minor in sociology: Criminal Justice are also offered through the sociology program.
Sociology focuses on links between individuals and society by studying social institutions such as the family, religion, education, criminal justice systems, and gender roles. Issues related to diversity based on social class, gender and race are emphasized throughout the curriculum.
Sociology majors complete an internship that provides hands-on experience in a setting related to the student’s particular interests. The sociology curriculum takes advantage of Carlow’s urban location with an emphasis on urban issues such as community development, crime, poverty, and racism.
Students with an undergraduate degree in sociology will be prepared for entry level jobs in social service agencies, criminal justice agencies, research organizations, and other positions in the public and private sectors. Students graduating with a sociology major are also prepared for graduate sociology programs and professional programs such as law school, social work, or international studies.

Sociology Minor
The sociology minor may be of particular interest to students in related fi elds such as social work, psychology, or education who plan to work in an urban area or whose work requires an understanding of diverse segments of our society. The minor requires SO 152 plus five Sociology electives. Students who complete the Certificate in Criminal Justice also earn a minor in sociology.
