AT 201 Overview of Art Therapy
Introduction to the divergent approaches in the art therapy fi eld. Involves various art therapists who are guest lecturers on aspects of art therapy as they relate to their personal style. Learn about the pioneers of art therapy and observe for yourself the responsibilities of a practicing art therapist (10-week psychiatric observation). 4 credits

AT 205 Foundations of Art Therapy
Introduction to art therapy through participation in a class in which students learn and create several art therapy assessments with a large variety of media and analyze their application within various populations and settings. The student will develop a basic understanding of the fi eld of art therapy and how its roots developed from the fi eld of psychology. Prerequisite: AT 201 or permission of program director. 3 credits

AT 339 Expressive Visual Techniques
This course is an introduction to various media as they apply to art therapy and to specifi c expressive art therapy techniques. The students will achieve understanding and working knowledge through participation, individually and in groups, in expressive art/art therapy activities and through discussion concerning the values, purposes, and goals of the art experience. Understanding of the experiential will be appreciated through discussion of the student’s own art work and through slides, fi lms, photographs, and art work of clients in treatment. 4 credits

AT 405 Art Therapy
Preparation Field Placement Field experience intended to acquaint the student with the activities, responsibilities, and requirements of the art therapist including both the physical and the psychological realities of the working environment within a facility. The student will be introduced to research in the fi eld and will conduct a pilot study. 3 credits

AT 406 Art Therapy Practicum
An in-depth sequence of therapeutic clinical art experiences under the supervision of a registered art therapist. Exposes the student to the practice of art therapy on a pre-professional level. The student will write a case study and present her work. 3 credits

AT 731 Overview of Art Therapy
The course is an introduction to art therapy and an orientation in the fields of expressive therapies. The course presents a variety of therapeutic modalities and provides the student with opportunities to experience those modalities. The student will experience workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and films and be required to complete observations with a local arts therapist. Elective 3 credits

AT 735 Foundations of Art Therapy
Foundations of Art Therapy investigates the basic concepts and theories in the field of Art Therapy. The essential elements of art therapy are explored through experiences that familiarize the student with art materials and the process of “art making.” Students are provided with supervised experiences that highlight the therapeutic benefits of art. Theoretical material pertinent to the process of art therapy is discussed. Elective 3 credits
