The Critical Point is Carlow’s journal of art and literature. The literature usually consists of poetry, personal and academic essays, short fiction and interviews, and the art work includes line drawings, woodcuts, etchings, photographs - anything that reproduces well in black and white.
How is it produced?
Submissions are accepted and reviewed during the Fall and the beginning of the Spring semesters. The editorial board and staff are responsible for collecting, reviewing, typing, and laying out the submissions. They do everything from choosing the type of font and paper to use to posting signs to laying the issue out on a computer. The journal is published each spring during Humanities week, and it is funded by the Humanities Department.
How can I be involved?
As a reader, typist, feature writer, proofreader, PR person, or a contributor.
How much time will I spend working on The Critical Point?
That is difficult to answer, because you can spend as much or as little time as you want, depending on what kind of position you are interested in filling.
What might I learn?
- How to proofread
- How a publication is created
- Desktop publishing skills
- How aesthetic decisions are made
- How to choose written pieces for publication
