An introductory exploration of the branch of art history known as iconography, which stud- ies the identification, description, and interpretation of the content of images. Students will explore the history of iconography and the dynamic concepts that controlled it as they discover why the growth of Christian iconography is so rich and varied. Students will trans- late information from a visual language to a textual language through formal and stylistic analysis. Students will compare and contrast ways that iconoclasm and censorship played a role in regulating iconographic artworks viewed by the public. 3 credits
