Chemistry is all around you! Did you ever stop to think that every single thing you interact with each day – everything you see, touch, smell, taste, or even breathe – is a chemical of some sort? The science of chemistry is most fascinating when you realize how much it relates to our ordinary everyday experiences.

Students receive individual attention from faculty in small class settings. This one-on-one interaction with faculty helps students master the challenges of chemistry. All of our faculty members have advanced degrees in chemistry, representing all the major chemical specialties. The program provides instruction in each of the four major sub-disciplines of chemistry: organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, and inorganic chemistry.

The Chemistry Department at Carlow offers the following features to enhance your program:

  • Hands-on experiential lab curriculum. Students work with instrumentation in their first year.
  • All laboratory courses are taught by professionals in our disciplines, not teaching assistants or student teachers.

Our program curriculum follows the national guidelines developed by the Committee on Professional Training (CPT) of the American Chemical Society.

Carlow's chemistry major is a great way to be pre-med, pre-dental, and pre-pharmacy.

Thinking about med school?  Becoming a dentist?  How about a career in pharmacy? A chemistry degree is a great place to start, and our agreement with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine makes it even easier.

Highlights

Dr. Bill Kowallis was awarded the Sisters of Mercy Award for Excellence in Academic Advising in 2014.

Dr. Monique Hockman was awarded the "Encouraging Women into the Chemical Sciences" award by the Women Chemists Committee of Pittsburgh in Spring of 2017.

Dr. Monique Hockman and her Molecular Gastronomy course (CHM285) were featured in a Pittsburgh Post Gazette Article in April of 2017.

All the chemistry professors at Carlow were big influences. They taught me to think outside the box and look at all paths to solve a problem. They taught me to think and work hard to obtain my goals. - Courtney Durante, Chemistry Major

Where Our Graduates Go

Carlow's chemistry program boasts a near 100% placement rate for our graduates! We are extremely proud of graduates moving on to Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry at institutions like University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and The Ohio State University.

In the local Pittsburgh region, students have obtained internships at the many research institutions and science-oriented industries around the areas, such as Calgon Carbon, PPG, and Sunoco Chemicals.

Students who graduate with a chemistry degree can pursue a number of careers. A chemistry degree from Carlow University enables graduates to work as forensic chemists or researchers for universities or government entities, such as the Environmental Protection Agency or a public health department. Chemists find employment in hospitals, pharmacies, and pharmaceutical companies while others become science and technical writers. With a chemistry degree, you can also excel in medical, dental, veterinary, and graduate school. Sometimes chemistry graduates attend law school to become environmental or patent lawyers.
