Human Resources Management

Technology has changed, and continues to dramatically change, the human resource profession. However, HR departments are discovering that the technological skills and abilities of their employees are lacking, making it difficult for the HR function to harness new technology and put it to work managing the sea of HR information.

David Russo, senior human resource professional and Society for Human Resource Managers (SHRM) board member, said, “it’s not enough for human resource professionals to learn how to operate the newest software and other technologies … Turning raw data into useful information is the real value technology brings to the human resources function by enabling HR practitioners to demonstrate in numbers and, conversely, in dollars, how decisions that affect employees affect the bottom line.” (HR News, September, 2000).

Students in this major receive a solid human resource base coupled with the skills to design and manage a human resource information system (HRIS). Two HRIS courses are woven into the program to provide students with hands-on design and management exposure to components of HRIS concepts. Students graduating in this major will be qualified to work in human resource departments in several capacities.
