ED 200 Assessment Center
Assessment of teaching skills and aptitude. Students participate in a series of simulations that are designed to uncover professional strengths and weaknesses. Remediation sessions target areas that will strengthen the teacher candidate’s preparation program. 3 credits

ED 203 Foundations and Psychology of Education for Health Care Professionals
An overview of the historical, philosophical, and psychological basis of the teaching learning process as it relates to the school nurse. A field experience in a regular education classroom is required. 3 credits

ED 252 Computers in Education
This class prepares educators to use, evaluate, and integrate a variety of computer-based programs into the classroom. Students will gain experience with microcomputers by reviewing the research, exploring software design features, completing activities using the computer, designing a computer program, and utilizing the World Wide Web. 3 credits

ED 258 Foundations of Education
An introductory professional course that is designed to present an overview of the historical, philosophical, economic, and societal forces that have shaped United States educational theory and practice. A 15-hour field placement is required. 3 credits

ED 259 Educational Psychology
An introductory professional course that is designed to present an overview of major theories of human development, child development, learning theories, and understanding of statistics and its application to education research. A 15-hour field placement is required. 3 credits.

ED 282 Learning Theory
This course focuses on cognitive theories that stress learners’ constructions of beliefs, skills, strategies, and knowledge. Beginning with historical perspectives and progressing to cognitive theories and processes of learning, this course will require students to examine their beliefs about learning, align these with existing theories, and determine how to apply learning principles to improve teaching and learning. Current information regarding the neuroscience of learning, content-area learning, and motivation will be blended with aforementioned theories to present a unified perspective of learning in educational settings. 3 credits + 30 hour field placement

ED 300 Professional Development
Focusing on the current issues in education, professional development combines workshops and seminars with student-designed goal development and attainment. Work in cohort groups, preliminary portfolio design, and Praxis exam preparation offer structure and practical application. Prerequisite: ED 100. 2 credits

ED 305 Integrating the Arts in Early Childhood and Elementary Education
Development of one’s own artistry along with facilation of the arts with children. Integrating the arts (visual arts, creative writing, music, movement, and creative play) into all aspects of the curriculum. Recognition of the arts as a way of knowing.

ED 307 Teaching English Language Learners, PK-12
This course provides both an introduction to the principles of second language acquisition, with a focus on linguistics, developmental factors, and cross-cultural awareness, as well as an introduction to methods in teaching English language learners from Pre-K to grade 12. Techniques for developing the conversation and literacy skills of English language learners in the mainstream classroom will be presented. Students will learn the availability of school and community resources to assist ELLs in language acquisition and content learning, and ways to promote parental/family involvement. 3 credits + 15 hour field placement

ED 308 Assessment and Intervention
This course will provide the beginning middle level teacher with a comprehensive menu of assessment techniques for evaluating how learners think, perform, and apply what they know. Students will learn how to assess the following: a learner’s knowledge base, a student’s declarative and procedural knowledge, cognitive and metacognitive strategies, transfer skills, and habits of mind. 3 credits

ED 312 Reading and Language Arts Methods
This course examines the philosophical orientation, pertinent research, and understanding of the reading process. Learners will construct their own philosophy of teaching reading and language arts. They will have opportunities to apply appropriate methods and specifi c strategies to various case studies and an integrated literature unit. Prerequisites: ED 259, PY 205 and IM 101. 3 credits

ED 322 Math Methods
A study of the theoretical base of principles requisite to teaching basic mathematics. Demonstration of ability to use a variety of materials and teaching strategies and to adapt them to particular student needs. Supervised practicum required in a basic education classroom. 3 credits

ED 370 Teaching & Professional Growth
The Primary emphasis of this course will be portfolio development, including the refinement of select artifacts; exploration of the teacher certification process and other professional support entities for educators; and critical review of contemporary issues in education. As a culminating activity, students will participate in a mock interview. 1 credit

ED 407 Senior Cohort
Core elements include developing an advanced professional portfolio incorporating outcome-based competency assessments, student teacher preparation, selected seminars, and a culminating interview simulation. 1 credit

ED 577 School Nurse Practicum
An 18-hour fi eld experience in an elementary or secondary classroom designed to allow students who seek the BSN or school nurse certifi cate to verify their understanding of teaching-learning theory and developmental characteristics of the learner through analysis of classroom experiences, child observations. and tutoring. In addition, students will develop their understanding of school organization, key moments in the history of American education and philosophical and social issues essential to understanding school setting. Prerequisite: ED 259/559. 1 credit
